Signal and Image Processing
Research at the USC Signal and Image Processing group has been at the forefront of signal processing with a rich history of seminal contributions to signal processing theory and applications in areas such as image processing and compression, higher-order statistics, fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. Research applications span a wide range of areas including medical imaging, array/distributed/collaborative signal processing, immersive audio, speech processing for recognition and synthesis, multimedia signal processing and compression, optical information processing, signal processing for communications, and other multimedia related technologies such as content-based representation and retrieval. Signal and Image Processing Institute researchers are also active in the design of VLSI, optical and opto-electronic systems for fast implementation of signal processing algorithms.
The faculty in signal and image processing are involved in a range of interdisciplinary research projects with collaborations with faculty in the medical school, the Annenberg School for Communication and the departments of psychology, computer science, cinema-TV, linguistics, neuroscience, politics, and others. Research is conducted in a number of world class facilities including laboratories for image compression, immersive audio, speech processing and optical computing. Significant research in multimedia processing is carried out at the Integrated Media Systems Center (Integrated Media Systems Center), a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center, which enjoys a multimillion-dollar budget supported by NSF and numerous corporate sponsors. Facilities for fabrication of microelectronic and electro-optical devices and a state-of-the-art network of workstations and computers provide a rich infrastructure for research in signal and image processing at USC.
